South Africa Women survived a spirited fightback from Pakistan Women to secure a dramatic two-wicket victory in their T20 international clash, chasing down 127 with 19 balls to spare despite a flurry of wickets that threatened to derail their pursuit.
After being asked to bat first, Pakistan Women posted a competitive 126/9 in 20 overs, thanks largely to a captain’s knock from Fatima Sana, who stood tall amid regular wickets. The skipper struck an unbeaten 55 off 38 balls, including six fours and two sixes, providing the backbone of Pakistan’s innings when the top order struggled to gain momentum.
Pakistan’s innings got off to a disastrous start as Marizanne Kapp ripped through the top order. Kapp dismissed Muneeba Ali, Gull Feroza, and Ayesha Zafar, reducing Pakistan to early trouble and placing South Africa firmly in control.
While wickets continued to tumble around her, Fatima Sana refused to surrender. She stitched together valuable partnerships and found support from Tuba Hassan, who contributed a useful 23 from 27 deliveries, helping Pakistan recover to a respectable total. South Africa’s bowling attack maintained pressure throughout the innings, with Kapp finishing as the standout performer with figures of 3 for 23, while Shabnim Ismail chipped in with a miserly 1 for 15.
Chasing 127, South Africa’s reply began shakily. Pakistan’s bowlers struck early as Sadia Iqbal removed skipper Laura Wolvaardt, while Fatima Sana and Tuba Hassan joined the wicket-taking party to leave the visitors under pressure.
The turning point of the chase came through a brilliant partnership between Annerie Dercksen and Nadine de Klerk. Dercksen played a fearless innings of 52 from 35 balls, smashing seven boundaries and two sixes, while De Klerk produced a composed 37 off 28 deliveries. Their counterattacking stand shifted momentum back in South Africa’s favour and put the target within reach.
Pakistan fought back admirably in the latter stages. Fatima Sana claimed three wickets and Tuba Hassan picked up two, raising hopes of an unlikely comeback. South Africa slipped from a comfortable position to 127/8, but the lower order managed to hold their nerve and guide the team over the line in 16.5 overs.
Despite ending on the losing side, Fatima Sana emerged as Pakistan’s standout performer with an impressive all-round display, scoring a match-high unbeaten half-century and collecting three wickets with the ball. However, her efforts were ultimately overshadowed by South Africa’s resilience and the match-winning contributions of Dercksen and De Klerk.
The victory highlighted South Africa Women’s depth and composure under pressure, while Pakistan Women will take encouragement from a spirited performance that pushed their opponents deep into the chase before narrowly falling short.
