A breathtaking assault from Richa Ghosh turned what seemed a straightforward chase into a nerve-wracking finish, but England ultimately held their composure to secure a narrow five-run victory over India Women in a thrilling T20 encounter.
The hosts had earlier posted 171 for 6, a total built around two experienced campaigners. Amy Jones played the anchor’s role with a polished 64 off 45 deliveries, while captain Nat Sciver-Brunt matched her determination with a well-crafted 57. Together, they ensured England never lost momentum despite India’s efforts to break partnerships.
India’s bowlers found themselves under pressure for much of the innings. Shreyanka Patil stood out with an impressive spell that yielded two wickets for 29 runs, while Radha Yadav also struck twice to prevent England from running away with the game.
Yet England saved their most damaging blows for the final overs. With the innings entering its closing stages, Danielle Gibson injected fresh energy into the scoreboard. Her unbeaten 30 from just 12 balls provided the late acceleration England desperately wanted and ultimately proved decisive. If England’s innings was built on control, India’s chase was a story of recovery. The visitors stumbled almost immediately when Smriti Mandhana departed for a solitary run. Shafali Verma briefly ignited hopes with a rapid 13 from six balls, but England’s bowlers repeatedly found breakthroughs whenever India threatened to settle.
Harmanpreet Kaur, Yastika Bhatia and Bharti Fulmali all made starts, yet none could convert them into the substantial contribution India required. As wickets continued to fall, the chase appeared to be slipping away.
Then came Richa Ghosh
Walking in with India under pressure, the wicketkeeper-batter launched a fearless counterattack that transformed the atmosphere of the contest. Boundaries began to flow, England’s fielders grew tense, and suddenly a seemingly safe target looked vulnerable.
Richa’s 68 off just 36 balls was an exhibition of clean striking and remarkable intent. Nine boundaries and two towering sixes brought India within touching distance of an unlikely victory, forcing England to rethink plans that had seemed foolproof only moments earlier.
She found support from Radha Yadav, whose lively 16 off nine deliveries kept the scoreboard moving and the pressure firmly on the hosts. But cricket often turns on a single moment.
England’s bowlers delivered when it mattered most, finding crucial wickets in the closing stages and denying India the final push. Linsey Smith’s three-wicket haul proved vital, while Charlotte Dean, Tilly Corteen-Coleman and Danielle Gibson chipped in with important breakthroughs.
India were eventually bowled out for 166 with just one ball remaining in the innings. For England, it was a victory earned through resilience and timely contributions across the board.
For India, the defeat will sting. Yet amid the disappointment, there was a silver lining. Richa Ghosh’s extraordinary innings served as a reminder of her growing stature in international cricket and nearly produced one of the great T20 escapes.
On a night filled with momentum swings, England celebrated the result. But many will remember it for the fearless brilliance of Richa Ghosh.
