There are very few people today who are unfamiliar with chess, especially in urban areas where the game enjoys widespread popularity. However, not many know the remarkable story of a young man who rose from a rural background and transformed his passion for chess into an international career. What makes his journey even more special is that he hails from Andhra Pradesh’s Guntur district and proudly represents Telugu talent on the global stage. His name is Dhulipalla Balachandra Prasad.
Born into a middle-class family, Balachandra’s parents worked hard to support their household. His father served as a school teacher, while his mother worked as a clerk in a college. Despite modest beginnings, Balachandra developed an extraordinary passion for chess at a young age.
One of his biggest inspirations has been five-time World Chess Champion and Indian chess legend Viswanathan Anand. Motivated by Anand’s achievements, Balachandra first learned about chess in 2007 and immediately began practicing the game. His dedication, combined with unwavering support from his parents, encouraged him to pursue chess seriously. By 2011, he had decided to make chess his career.
Today, Balachandra Prasad has earned the prestigious title of International Master (IM) and has accumulated more than 135 medals throughout his chess journey. From state-level competitions to national and international tournaments, he has consistently showcased his talent and determination.
Inspired by his idol Viswanathan Anand, Balachandra’s ultimate goal is to achieve the coveted Grandmaster (GM) title. He currently holds a FIDE rating of 2432, placing him among India’s highly accomplished chess players.
One of the standout moments of his career came during the 2023 Menorca Masters Tournament in Spain, where he secured a draw against reigning World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju. The result highlighted Balachandra’s ability to compete against the world’s elite and demonstrated his growing presence on the international chess circuit.
Known for his strategic approach to the game, Balachandra adapts his openings and tactics based on his opponents’ moves. Rather than relying on a fixed style, he carefully studies positions and responds according to the challenges presented on the board. This flexibility has become one of his greatest strengths.
Over the years, Balachandra has represented India in numerous tournaments and has competed in approximately 14 countries, defeating several accomplished chess players while challenging many others with his unique style of play.
Balachandra strongly believes that talent belongs to no particular region or background. In his view, chess is a pure mind sport where geographical boundaries and social limitations have little significance. At the same time, he feels that players emerging from rural areas deserve greater institutional support.
According to him, states such as Odisha and Tamil Nadu have created stronger ecosystems for chess development, and Andhra Pradesh can further enhance its support for aspiring players. Participating in international tournaments often requires significant financial resources, and many talented youngsters are unable to pursue their dreams due to the high costs involved. As a result, countless promising careers end before they truly begin.
Balachandra hopes that the Andhra Pradesh government and sporting authorities will continue to invest in young talent and provide more opportunities for emerging athletes to compete at higher levels.
From a small town in Andhra Pradesh to international chess arenas across the world, Balachandra Prasad’s journey stands as a powerful example of determination, hard work, and perseverance.
