The Indian contingent is gearing up for the 2026 Commonwealth Games, scheduled to take place in Glasgow from July 23 to August 2. Preparations are currently in full swing as selectors closely evaluate athletes across multiple disciplines to build a competitive squad capable of challenging the world’s best.
A major focus has been placed on athletics, where India is expected to field a 32-member squad consisting of 16 male and 16 female athletes. The Athletics Federation of India is reportedly taking a highly cautious and strategic approach during the selection process, carefully assessing each athlete’s recent performances, fitness levels, and event-specific strengths before finalising the team.
Boxing Selection Process Intensifies
The boxing category has emerged as one of the most closely monitored sections during the selection phase. Several prominent names are likely to secure their spots in the women’s division, including Sakshi Chaudhary, Preeti Pawar, Jaismine Lamboria, Priya Ghanghas, Praveen Hooda, and Arundhati Chaudhary.
In the men’s division, Jadumani Singh, Sachin Siwach, Aditya Pratap Singh, Sumit Kundu, Ankush, Kapil Pokhariya, and Narendra Berwal are expected to represent India at the prestigious multi-sport event.
Athletics Stars Expected to Shine
India’s athletics team is also shaping up strongly ahead of the Games. Rising sprint sensation Animesh Kujur is likely to feature in the 100m and 200m events, while Tejas Shirse is expected to compete in the 110m hurdles category.
Meanwhile, star athletes Tejaswin Shankar and Murali Sreeshankar are also set to play crucial roles for India in their respective disciplines, boosting the nation’s medal hopes.
Several Sports Dropped From 2026 Games
In a major development, organisers have decided to remove 10 sports, including hockey, from the 2026 Commonwealth Games programme. Reports suggest that budget constraints played a key role in the decision, leading to a significantly trimmed sporting schedule for this edition of the Games.
Despite the reduced number of events, India is expected to remain one of the strongest contenders at the tournament, with athletes aiming to deliver standout performances on the international stage.
